The best trek in the "Picos de Europa" in northern Spain

3 level: "VINDIO" Ring (3 or 4 days/trek), "EXTREM" Ring (6 or 7 days/trek), and the "TRES MACIZOS" Ring (7 or 9 days/trek). 

The circuits traverses the incredible and spectacular mountains of the National Parkthe gorges, the valleys, the vast glacial lakes, the rocky crests, the forest, and the best way to get to know them is on foot.

The protected surroundings of the Picos de Europa mountains lie across three provinces in northern Spain: Cantabria, Asturias and León. This was the first National Park to be declared in Spain and there is no doubt that its natural richness and outstanding scenery make it a truly unique place. Hiking is the ideal way to explore all its attractions, as there is a network of clearly signposted routes throughout the park which will enable you to discover all its most emblematic sites. When you gaze upon the lakes of Covadonga, the views of the Naranjo de Bulnes or the spectacular Cares gorge, you're bound to feel glad that you set out on your walk.


VINDIO RING (4 stages) - Has a length of 63 Km. and a positive difference of 3.900 m. It is theoretically the most attainable tour for hikers and montaineers with minor experience: 

STAGE 1: Of "Cain" (460 m.) to "Vega de Ario" (1630 m.) for the "Ruta del Cares" and "Canal de Trea". (Time: 5-6 h.) STAGE 2: Of "Vega de Ario" (1630 m.) to "Vegarredonda" (1460 m.) for the "Vega de Aliseda" and "Llampamala". (Time: 6-7 h.) (Option: "Vega de Ario" to "Lagos de Enol": (Time: 7-8 horas). STAGE 3: (8-10 h.) Of "Vegarredonda" (1460 m.) to "Vegabaño" (1380 m.) for "Fuente Prieta", "Vega Huerta" and "Canal del Perro". (Time: 8-10 h.). STAGE 4: (6-7 h.) Of "Vegabaño" (1380 m.) to "Caín" (460 m.) for el "Puerto de Dobres" (Time: 6-7 h.) ANILLO DE PICOS

EXTREM RING (from 6 to 7 stages) - Has a length of 82 km and a positive difference of 7.050 m. This itinerary is designed for montaineers experts and with good training. Also we can realize it in his version only of the "Macizo Central", in three days with exit from Cain.

STAGE 1: Of "Cain" (460 m.) to "Vega de Ario" (1630 m.) for the "Ruta del Cares" and "Canal de Trea". (Time: 5-6 h.) STAGE 2: Of "Vega de Ario" (1630 m.) to "Vegarredonda" (1460 m.) for the "Vega de Aliseda" and "Llampamala". (Time: 6-7 h.) (Option: "Vega de Ario" to "Lagos de Enol": (Time: 7-8 horas). STAGE 3: (8-10 h.) Of "Vegarredonda" (1460 m.) to "Vegabaño" (1380 m.) for "Fuente Prieta", "Vega Huerta" and "Canal del Perro". (Time: 8-10 h.). STAGE 4: (6-7 h.) Of "Vegabaño" (1380 m.) to "Collado Jermoso" (2064 m.) for "Los puertos de Dobres" and Canal de Asotín". (Time: 9 h.). STAGE 5: (8-9 h.) 1- Of "Collado Jermoso" (2064 m.) to "Cabaña Verónica" (2325 m.) for "Tiro Casares". (Time: 2 h 30 min). 2- Of "Cabaña Verónica" (2325 m.) to Vega de Urriellu" (1953 m.) (Time: 3 h). 3- Of "Vega de Urriello (1953 m.) to "Jou de los Cabrones" (2034 m.) for the "Horcada Arenera". (Time: 2 h 45 min). STAGE 6: Of "Jou de los Cabrones" (2034 m.) to "Cain" (460 m.) for the ancient route. (Time: 6 h); (Option for the "Ruta Cares", Time: 8 h) ANILLO DE PICOS

TRES MACIZOS RING (from 6 to 9 stages) - East Trekking has 110 Km and 9.350 m. Of positive difference. Undoubtedly, only within reach of montaineers very experienced and with very good training.

How to get to the Picos de Europa


The best idea is to choose a point as your 'centre of operations' from which to set out on your excursions, Caín in the National Park, where you'll also find a variety of accommodation options and its the best option. You can reach the area by bus or by taxi from the towns and villages nearby (Posada de Valdeón), or else in your own car. Inside the park there is parking available in the villages and in the zones near the most popular routes.

From León there are regular bus routes to the towns and villages near the Picos de Europa such as León, Cistierna, Riaño, there are buses from all these towns towards the interior of the National Park.
